Seeker Esparza: good morning!

Seeker Esparza: or whatever time it is where you are lol

Eponine Osterham: lols to the comic

Grog Waydelich: can you see the cartoon from there?

Grog Waydelich: So here's the true story of the cartoon ... (just while we wait until start time) ...

Grog Waydelich: I am temporarily living in Palo Alto ...

Grog Waydelich: I moved into an interesting share house, mostly Stanford postgrads ...

Grog Waydelich: one of the guys won a New Yorker magazine cartoon caption contest ...

Eponine Osterham: clever!

CharlotteLennox Scribe: awesome!

Grog Waydelich: I looked at it online, and found to my amazement that it is relevant to my project at PARC ...

Grog Waydelich: (problems of 3d reference during collaborative building)

Grog Waydelich: I asked him, I have to use this in my next Powerpoint display ... he said I could!

Seeker Esparza: now thats what I call an enterance!

PuRpleThistLe MacMoragh: huzzah!

PuRpleThistLe MacMoragh: just what I was going for!

Grog Waydelich: a few preliminaries ...

Grog Waydelich: is everyone happy if I use voice?

Learner Magic: Research meeting?

Grog Waydelich: yes

Grog Waydelich: using voice

Seeker Esparza: mostly people have been using text

Seeker Esparza: but the speaker use voice

Grog Waydelich: Topics: any or all of these, depending on what people are interested in

1. collaborative building

2. camera-avatar independence

3. pros and cons of voice

4. using a script to "LifeLog" in SL

5. format of these meetings

Grog Waydelich: voting on topics ...

Seeker Esparza: perhaps an overview would be good to get discussion going

Teachergirl Razor: a little on each

Madoc Constantine: pros and cons of voice sounds interesting for me

Orwell Sorbet: voice too

lizit Cleanslate: I go for pros and cons of voice

Dongon Takaaki: I like topic 3 too

Mariis Mills: pros and cons works for me as well :-)

Lacan Galicia: Voice is ok to me

Jeni Netizen: Pros and cons sounds good to me.

Mew Aeon: pros and cons

Eponine Osterham: i'm fine with anything

Learner Magic: Voice is good

CharlotteLennox Scribe: collaborative building

Grog Waydelich: re collaborative building project at PARC .. http://blogs.parc.com/playon/archives/2008/09/collaborative_b.html#more

Grog Waydelich: http://blogs.parc.com/playon/archives/2008/09/collaborative_b.html#more

Grog Waydelich: 1. collaborative building

2. camera-avatar independence

3. pros and cons of voice

4. using a script to "LifeLog" in SL

5. format of these meetings

Olf Ort: Just a quick question

Grog Waydelich: sure

Olf Ort: What is the overall aim of the study? e.g.

Olf Ort: increasing useability of SL?

Mariis Mills: Question: did anything surprise you ?

Seeker Esparza: it's interestingfrom the point of view of consciousness

Seeker Esparza: the mind body split

Seeker Esparza: comparison to sl av veersus camera view

Ny Tolsen: but there is this function "show look at" in the advanced menu

Ny Tolsen: It's Advanced Menu -> Character -> Show Look At

Dongon Takaaki: :)

Teachergirl Razor: yes

Ny Tolsen: It would be interesting what visualisations would be better? (Show a pair of eyes / show the head)

Grog Waydelich: 1. collaborative building

2. camera-avatar independence

3. pros and cons of voice

4. using a script to "LifeLog" in SL

5. format of these meetings

Olf Ort: I still haven't found the advanced menu is this a mac thing?

Olf Ort: I have amac and I can't find it

Olf Ort: Oh well - somehting for later

Mew Aeon: cmd opt shift d

Kid Kuhn: * PC - Ctrl-Alt-D

 * Mac - Opt-Ctrl-D

Olf Ort: Thnks

Seeker Esparza: I find it interesting that some people feel that and others dont

Seeker Esparza: presence in avatar

Spiral Theas: I'm on a Mac and have the advanced menu. I think it's a version of SL-software thing.

Seeker Esparza: that's what I'm interested in for my PhD

Grog Waydelich: What are the differences between voice and text?

Grog Waydelich: Three answers:

1. properties of the media

2. users' physical context

3. extra technical requirements of voice

Grog Waydelich: http://disweb.dis.unimelb.edu.au/staff//gwadley/

Grog Waydelich: immersionists and augmentationists

Teachergirl Razor: yes

Seeker Esparza: yes

Kid Kuhn: yes

Dongon Takaaki: yup

Chimera Cosmos: yes

Chimera Cosmos: but it is a contested categorization :-)

Chimera Cosmos: agree

Chimera Cosmos: I think that most of us educators are pretty WYSIWYG

Chimera Cosmos: for collaborative purposes

Seeker Esparza: I think it's up to the presenter and the type of meeting

Chimera Cosmos: right--that was our discussion--presenter option

Jeni Netizen: This is my first week here, but this format seemed to work well. Although, I think that could depend on the people and the topic.

Olf Ort: This is my first voice meeting and it works much better than pure text

Spiral Theas: Or maybe interweave?

Olf Ort: I like the option of commenting or asking in text though since I don't know anyone here

Grog Waydelich: any volunteers for next week?

Spiral Theas: 15 minutes present, discuss, then more present?

Seeker Esparza: I like it when the presenter talks and others use text

Seeker Esparza: easier to keep up

homer Tennen: same here

Seeker Esparza: and seems to flow better

Grog Waydelich: I agree

Jeni Netizen: Also gives the presenter the option of respondidng right away or not.

homer Tennen: it keeps me focused

Seeker Esparza: I think we should leave content of the meetings up to the presenter

Seeker Esparza: ie someone might want to talk about their research

Chimera Cosmos: me too--only presenter in voice

Ny Tolsen: I really like it that the speaker can elaborate on things that are mentioned ans asked in the chat

Chimera Cosmos: then discussion during and after in text

Seeker Esparza: someone might want to talk about what they would like to research and get feedback

Grog Waydelich: Anyone want to "own" next week? Or do we need a two-week gap between meetings?

Chimera Cosmos: with presenter moderating in voice

Seeker Esparza: etd

Olf Ort: I would like to present by building on what has been talked about this week.

Olf Ort: I am interested in the use of SL for teaching students urban planning

Mariis Mills: agree .. best mode .. speaker on voice .. the rest on text

Grog Waydelich: can you give away your RL id Olf?

Seeker Esparza: I should add that if you dont have a 'place' you are welcome to use Monash to present

Olf Ort: Marco Amati - Macquarie Uni

Grog Waydelich: sounds like a good topic

Grog Waydelich: oh, Macquarie!

Olf Ort: ha ha!

Seeker Esparza: another Aussie

Grog Waydelich: Perhaps we should have a more Australia-friendly time?!

Mariis Mills: sounds great Olf

Olf Ort: kind of

Seeker Esparza: I think we are lucky it is 9am her

Seeker Esparza: poor europeans I think it is 10pm

Jeni Netizen: 6 pm here.

Grog Waydelich: Now that the US has stopped daylight saving, and Australia has started it, the 1400SLT time is less horrible to Australians

lizit Cleanslate: 11pm where I am though

Chimera Cosmos: danged Aussies are everywhere :-)

Ny Tolsen: it is midnight in switzerland

Seeker Esparza: yikes

Mariis Mills: In DK too ..

Seeker Esparza: Ny, you are dedicated lol

Ny Tolsen: :)

Olf Ort: Ok - well let's keep it at 2pm SLT no?

Ny Tolsen: trying to be M)

Chimera Cosmos: You can still talk Grog :-))

Grog Waydelich: It's truly impossible to find one time that suits everyone -- perhaps we just leave it to the presenter each week to choose one. As long as it changes week to week, everyone gets a range of good and bad times.

Seeker Esparza: I dont mind a hour earlier if it helps others to stay awake

Chimera Cosmos: yes--presenter choice

Grog Waydelich: so is Olf the point-person next week?

Grog Waydelich: anyone else want to volunteer?

Seeker Esparza: sounds good

Olf Ort: Fair enough. It is in my interests to make it as easy for everyone to attend though

Ny Tolsen: yes, if it changes from week to week it's good. would just not be perfect to keep it a midnight meeting

Chimera Cosmos: or maybe four places

Ny Tolsen: :)

Chimera Cosmos: also those between Europe and OZ

Ny Tolsen: i would like to, butgive me another 3 or 4 weeks

Olf Ort: Ok

Ny Tolsen: (switzerland)

Seeker Esparza: I will try, I'm actually better later at night than morning

Seeker Esparza: Maybe a wiki?

Chimera Cosmos: or wiki--so can edit

Chimera Cosmos: right

Seeker Esparza: then we can post transcripts etc

Ny Tolsen: would be nice!

Olf Ort: google groups?

Mariis Mills: I could present a study I did in here with 22 students over 5 weeks ? But not until december .

Seeker Esparza: wiki would be better than website

Chimera Cosmos: we could add a page to the SLED wiki

Seeker Esparza: more collaborative

Chimera Cosmos: for the group

homer Tennen: wiki would be good

lizit Cleanslate: Doesn't the RexEd site have events listed

Grog Waydelich: a website for time/date/topic/presenter/transcript/etc

lizit Cleanslate: *REZED

Chimera Cosmos: central

Seeker Esparza: rezed or sled would be great

Chimera Cosmos: lots of overlap

Chimera Cosmos: would increase exposure too

Ny Tolsen: i vote for a wiki - what is rezed actually?

Seeker Esparza: rezed has facility to have groups

Chimera Cosmos: everyone can

Seeker Esparza: can get edit rights

Chimera Cosmos: just join

Chimera Cosmos: Rezed is a Ning network

homer Tennen: i could present perhaps in late nov or dec (am in uk)

Chimera Cosmos: presenter could put up own

Chimera Cosmos: from their week

Seeker Esparza: but think a 'place' is a good idea to store stuff and make announcements

Chimera Cosmos: no!

Chimera Cosmos: mean put it up on the wiki

Chimera Cosmos: for their week

Chimera Cosmos: right

Ny Tolsen: in a wiki we could plan dates more in the future

Chimera Cosmos: yes

Olf Ort: Yes

Seeker Esparza: great outfit olf

Olf Ort: I haven't used them before.

Chimera Cosmos: a Rezed group would be in threaded format, SLED in free form wiki

Olf Ort: Sure

Seeker Esparza: I can set up a free wiki for the group if you like

Olf Ort: Yes Seeker, please do.

Chimera Cosmos: SLED is also SL specific

Chimera Cosmos: Rezed is for any virtual world

Olf Ort: I have a very drafty paper I would like people to comment on

Chimera Cosmos: and a lot of the 1000 members are K-12 educators

Olf Ort: I can post it up there in advance

Chimera Cosmos: cool Olf!

Olf Ort: Ok great

Ny Tolsen: SLED is about Education, and we are more about Research, right?

Seeker Esparza: Ok, so do you want me to set up a sl researchers wiki

Seeker Esparza: there are a lot of differences

Ny Tolsen: where?

Chimera Cosmos: are most here doing educational research?

lizit Cleanslate: but lots of people are involved in both

Chimera Cosmos: or not?

lizit Cleanslate: the voice stuff is very relevant

Olf Ort: And the pointing stuff

Ny Tolsen: but if we decide for SLED than the focus will get more on education than on research i think.... dont know if we want that....

Grog Waydelich: sorry Seeker, my sitting and standing is out of control on this thing

Seeker Esparza: I agree ny

Mariis Mills: Very relevant for anyone using sl .. we're all at a starting point ..

Ny Tolsen: because other SLEDers will join that are not that interested in research

Seeker Esparza: agree

Chimera Cosmos: then we need our own wiki

Seeker Esparza: OK, I will make a wiki and send the link to the list

Chimera Cosmos: with someone in charge :-)

Chimera Cosmos: that's the problem lol

Ny Tolsen: perfect, Seeker!

Ny Tolsen: thanks

homer Tennen: many thanks

Olf Ort: thanks

Jeni Netizen: Thanks!

Seeker Esparza: yes, they are floating around

Seeker Esparza: I have them and will add to the wikiwhen I creat it

Seeker Esparza: send it to me and I will clean it and add

Ny Tolsen: credentials?

Chimera Cosmos: that could go on a page that only members can access

Seeker Esparza: Wiki will be open for membership wehen you are member you will have edit rights

Seeker Esparza: so will be able to make pages etc

Seeker Esparza: if they want to make it public - why not?

Chimera Cosmos: yes--opt out

Chimera Cosmos: if not comfortable

Seeker Esparza: email it to me in RL

Grog Waydelich: meta- conversation!

Seeker Esparza: seekersbrain@gmail.com

Ny Tolsen: is there an SL group for these meetings - and this group? or dont we need that?

Chimera Cosmos: weird

Chimera Cosmos: could we announce on other groups?

Seeker Esparza: let'smake an inworld group

Chimera Cosmos: with SL research focus?

Seeker Esparza: good for sending announcements

Seeker Esparza: reminders etc

Chimera Cosmos: like Science Friday does

Chimera Cosmos: so we can take over!!

Chimera Cosmos: lol

Jeni Netizen: I'm in a few as well, and yeah, there doesn't seem to be a lot going on.

Seeker Esparza: we could be called Tuesday research group

Ny Tolsen: but if we have the wiki maybe that's enough for starters?

Jeni Netizen: Tuesday Night Research Club?

Olf Ort: It's wednesday here

Seeker Esparza: wed in Aus

Chimera Cosmos: "I don't want to be a member of any club that would have me"

Seeker Esparza: good point

Jeni Netizen: Well, scratch that, then.

Seeker Esparza: he he

Chimera Cosmos: Groucho Marx

Seeker Esparza: SL Researchers Discussion Group 'SLRDG'

lizit Cleanslate: Past my bedtime - goodnight folk

Ny Tolsen: are you guys only interested in SL or also in OpenSim, Activeworlds etc?

Seeker Esparza: seeya lizit

Seeker Esparza: yes good point

Seeker Esparza: I'm interested in all

Jeni Netizen: I'm dipping my toes into There, but it's mostly SL on my end.

Ny Tolsen: me too

Jeni Netizen: Although I'm interested in video game research as well...

Olf Ort: Its a really good question. Google Earth and sketchup are clear rivals to SL for what I want to do with it

birichina3 Biler is Online

Chimera Cosmos: SL has the broadest community by far

Seeker Esparza: yes

Jeni Netizen: And I need to vacate my lab, so take care all, and thanks.

Olf Ort: Also a lot of sunk costs for current users

Chimera Cosmos: and I think the community aspect is really important for research and education

Ny Tolsen: SL is for sure the best place to meet (so far)

Seeker Esparza: ok to meet in SL but sometimes talk about others

Chimera Cosmos: yes

Olf Ort: I agree

Seeker Esparza: It's easier to meet here as we are all used to the environment

Seeker Esparza: 'but I wopuld love to discuss other environments

Olf Ort: I have to go now. Seeker will you be in touch? marco.amati@mq.edu.au

Chimera Cosmos: thanks Grog

Olf Ort: Ok see you both again!

Grog Waydelich: bye
